Dionne Warwick's Home In Brazil Burglarized - Brief Article
Jet, Sept 27, 1999
Five men dressed as repairmen entered singer Dionne Warwick's home in Rio De
Janeiro, Brazil, tied up the singer's brother, along with a housekeeper, and
stole cash and thousands of dollars in jewelry.
The famed singer, who has a home in Rio's upscale Jardim Botanico district,
was on tour in Myrtle Beach, SC, at the time.
According to news reports, more than $60,000 in cash and jewelry were stolen
during the robbery. The thieves left behind a gold record, apparently
because they were unable to pry it from the wall.
Police inspector Carlos Gomes said that he was waiting to hear from the
singer's brother, Henry Carr, before he could confirm what was stolen.
Carr and the housekeeper were not harmed.
Upon hearing of the incident, Ms. Warwick issued a press statement: "I truly
regret the violent act that occurred last week at my home in Brazil.
"I know that this does not reflect the character of Brazil or her people
who I have come to love and know," she said.
"It is a shame that this happened. However, I thank God that only those
things that are replaceable were taken, and no one, especially Henry, my
brother, and my wonderful houseman, Luis, were harmed."
She added, "My intent is to still consider Brazil my second home." She also
said she would continue her charitable efforts with the children of Brazil
and other worthwhile causes.
She noted, "I feel that this will deter what happened to my home from
happening to others. We all must understand that we have to start paying
attention to all people, regardless of their station in life."
She concluded, "I send a big kiss to Brazil, and her people, and I will be
`home' soon!"
