A Favela
Split? - McDonald's opens ice cream kiosk in Rio de Janeiro slum - Brief
Article
Latin Trade, March, 2000
McDonald's recently opened its first icecream kiosk in a Rio de Janeiro "favela,"
or slum. The U.S. hamburger chain's kiosks are fairly common throughout
Brazil but are usually located in safer areas. While there's some risk,

favela. Brazil is McDonald's eighth largest market, with 387 restaurants in
93 cities and 284 kiosks.
