Hotel collapses in Rio de Janeiro

From Journal Sentinel wire reports

Thursday, September 26, 2002

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil -- A building housing a hotel and restaurant collapsed in downtown Rio on Wednesday, and rescue officials said they believed an unknown number of people were buried in the rubble.

The building, about six stories high, was an old structure of brick and wood beams that collapsed onto Rosario St. in Rio's financial district. The block was cordoned off and nearby buildings were evacuated.

About 30 rescue workers dug through the rubble with their hands, while others used sledgehammers and bolt-cutters to break through larger debris.
