Supermarkets face charges over nutrition labels - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Brief Article
Eurofood, May 24, 2001
Charges have been filed against six supermarket operators in Brazil following an edict that retailers must ensure that the products they sell have clear and consistent nutritional labelling. The sanctioned supermarkets in Rio de Janeiro are Pao de Acuar, Zona Sul, Bon Marche, Extra and Guanabara.

Brazil's National Sanitation Monitoring Agency has warned that guidelines established by the health ministry must be met. These require a table of information indicating nutritional value relative to established minimal daily requirements. Health officials are concerned that an estimated 32 million Brazilians suffer from obesity.
