The Portuguese spoken in Brazil is significantly different from that used in Portugal itself. The pronunciation is vastly different and there are many different words as well. So if you buy a phrase book make sure it is specifically for Brazil ( like those listed on the left) Note that Portuguese is an "almost" phonetic language. That means it is pronounced as it is written. But you need to know how the individual letters are pronounced. For example the letter R in most instances is pronounced as the letter H is pronounced in English, Rio sounds like Hio.
